Roles
After reading the roles -- be sure to check out the video of the Amazon at the CNN link here: VIDEO
Kyle or Kayla- A Corporate
America -- Man of the Year.
He/she believes that the
global population has more than tripled this century, and will continue this
upward climb for, at least, the next 50. By 2040, the world
population is expected to reach ten billion. As the number of people on
earth increases each year, the number of forest products needed also
increases. We need to harvest tropical forests to keep up with this growth
Samantha or Phil- A
scientist that is assigned to the tropical rainforest in South America
He/she believes that
rainforests are the what keeps up alive and breathing. Our planet is sick
-- even dying. There is little time left to save the rainforest ecosystem and
the people, plants and animals who live within it. If the rate of destruction
continues corporate greed will eat the last remaining rainforests in less than
40 years. FYI: Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth's surface; now
they cover a mere 6%.
Paola or Paolo- An
indigenous rainforest person
He/she never hears the
distant scream of the howler monkey or the lovely lilt of the singing
birds anymore. The rumble of the giant bulldozers and logging trucks have
replaced the music of the jungle. The rainforest is my home. His/her
people have used the land for centuries without harming it. If the
rainforests are destroyed -- so, too, will be his people.
Marco or Mario - An
indigenous rainforest worker employed by an oil company
He/she has just been trained by the oil company to bulldoze the roads.
He/she is glad be making money to help support his/her family of seven children.
The oil company even provides medical and dental care, educational materials,
school rooms and health clinics to his/her village. He/she wonders how
this oil company can really be that bad.
